Our Mission

Here at Winnebago Bond Project, we know that sometimes all it takes to change the world is a little support. We help pay bond for people charged with crimes in Winnebago County, Illinois. Using a revolving fund, we help individuals who can't afford to post bail themselves, or by their families. The presumption is supposed to be you're innocent before being proven guilty before trial. The current system is set to the thought that you're guilty, and have to prove your innocence. WBP helps restore the presumption of innocence, and gives you a better fighting chance for your case, as you remain free. The inability to post bail leads to an increase in losing housing and jobs, loss of child custody, the struggle of separation of families, less of a support system with the high costs of calls and services to function mentally while locked up in county, longer sentences, and higher conviction rates of people just wanting to escape from the county system environment.  WBP advocates to abolish the monetary bond system, and engage the public with education of the role of bond in the criminal legal system. We are doing every effort to combat mass incarceration at the front end of the system. WBP is committed to long-term relationship building and organizing with people most directly impacted by criminal justice system. We hope to take it it a step further to set up better structure for the accused to have a fighting chance, and not be set up for failure. The core of our efforts is to bring fresh ideas and passion to the range of activities we’re committed to being involved in. Through all of our endeavors we hope to display the conviction behind our beliefs. Justice shouldn't be based on the size of your bank account. We need to be able to give everyone an equal chance to combat the racial and economic disparities in the bail system. We need to reform the unjust and fundamentally broken bail system.

"The criminal justice system, like any system designed by human beings, clearly has it flaws”
